System Configuration
So once again the topic of system configuration and Elektra (aka LinuxRegistry) has come up on fedora-devel-list and since I know most people even on the list don’t keep up because of the sheer volume, I’m going to use my blog to link to my response.

It shouldn’t be a surprise to people knowing me that I consider myself a UNIX hater. In fact, this whole thread on f-d-l made me realize that the with regards to system configuration you really only want two things: session-wide and site-wide configuration. Maybe it’s time to open a CafePress store and pimp shirts and stickers with the mottos a’la # rm -rf /etc. Seriously.
Received my MacBook Pro last week and I’m psyched. Now to get Fedora installed

So moving /etc into LDAP will make things simpler? Are you deranged???
/etc is ugly, no doubt about it. But LDAP is so much uglier it defies belief. It suffers from all the problems gconf does now, plus it’s carrying about 900 pounds of legacy.
Have you used LDAP much?

Okay, let me start off by stating that this is not a flame but rather a request for help. From a user perspective, I really like what is being done with gnome-mount, hal, and friends. It addresses one of the big usability issues I’ve had where Linux has obviously been lagging behind the rest of the modern computing world (okay, to be fair, Knoppix had automatic detection and presentation of USB mass storage devices figured out years ago, but let’s move on).
Unfortunately, I’m not coming from the typical user prespective in doing embedded Linux development from my Fedora Core 5 workstation. I’m using an USB-based CF reader to prepare my file system. Unfortunately, all of these automagic tools that are great for user land are getting in the way and my embedded file system is getting corrupted far more often than not (yes, even from an unchanged tarball of the intended contents…I spent a long time thinking that my problems were due to changes I had been making in the embedded system’s root filesystem).
So, is there a way I can mark my CF card or the reader itself so that HAL and friends ignore it and don’t do anything special (like mounting it under ‘/media/disk*’)? Short of that optimal solution, is there a way I can turn off this magic altogether? I realize that this is not a facility needed for general desktop usage, but I’m hoping you can throw this poor overworked systems programmer a bone and give me back the manual control I need to proceed with my development.
